Here’s a question for you. When is your dog’s birthday?
If you’re glancing at your calendar and proudly thinking, April 12, obviously. There was cake. Congratulations. You’re in the majority. But if your dog came from a shelter, your answer might be, “Well… sometime?” And that’s okay.
Many shelter dogs arrive without paperwork or puppy photos, and no one who knows whether they were born in January, June, or October.
So rather than letting those dogs miss out entirely, animal lovers came up with a wonderfully simple idea: Let’s celebrate them all on August 1.
It’s called DOGust, and it’s recognized as the Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs.
Which means that somewhere today, a three-legged beagle is wearing a birthday hat against his will. A senior Labrador is enjoying an extra peanut butter treat. A shelter volunteer is singing “Happy Birthday” to an audience that is far more interested in the cookies than the music.

1. Celebrate Your Own Shelter Superstar
If your dog came from a shelter or rescue, today is officially their honorary birthday.
Will they understand the concept of birthdays? No.
Will they understand “special treat,” “long walk,” or “squeaky dinosaur toy?” Absolutely.
2. Buy a Present for a Dog You’ve Never Met
Few things feel better than shopping for someone else. Many shelters have wish lists filled with the not-so-glamorous essentials—food, blankets, towels, cleaning supplies—and a few fun things like toys and treats.

You might leave with a new appreciation for the people who care for homeless animals every single day.
