FLEA AND TICK SEASON IS FAST APPROACHING!

No one wants to worry about fleas being brought into the home from their furry best friend. Not only are they unwanted but they pose potential health risks for you and your pets.

Parasite prevention in this region focuses on:

  •  Fleas – they can be a real nuisance once they set up shop in your house! Did you know that fleas can also contain the early stages of tapeworm and cause a tapeworm infection in your pet?
  • Ticks – very likely to transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.
  • Internal parasites such as roundworm, hookworm and tapeworm.

TICKS are out and questing as soon as the temperature is above 4 degrees Celsius. Because of the increase risk of tick-borne diseases in our area in the past year we are now recommending Flea and Tick prevention from MARCH TO DECEMBER

We would like to review some things about your pet’s lifestyle before choosing the best product for them:

1) Does your dog hunt or find rabbits and rodents to eat along their travels?

2) Does your dog roam off leash in the bush? Does your dog eat a raw food diet?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, we will want you to give Interceptor Plus for the tapeworm protection in addition to Simparica.

Other questions to consider:

2) Do you travel out of this region with your pet?

If traveling South of Huntsville Heartworm prevention is very important. If you travel to Southern US i.e Florida- heartworm and tick prevention is needed year-round.

3) Have you had fleas in your house recently?

A veterinary approved flea product is needed for 3- 4 months for all animals in the house, including our pocket pet friends.

4) Did you miss any doses last year?

If yes, we will recommend a heartworm and tick-borne disease test panel to make sure there was not any exposure to disease.

5) Does your dog eat poop or go to off leash parks or doggy day care?

Internal parasite prevention will be important to consider year round.

We look forward to speaking with you about your pet’s needs this season! Please let us know if there is any further information you would like regarding parasites in this area.
